The Best Time of Year for Family Beach Photos in Sarasota & Manatee

Family walking along an Anna Maria Island beach in soft golden-hour light

One of the first questions families ask us is simple: when should we book? The good news is that Sarasota and Manatee County are gorgeous for outdoor portraits in every season — we photograph families on the beach all twelve months of the year. The better question is what kind of session you’re picturing, because the light, the crowds, and the weather each shift a little as the year goes on.

Why the Gulf Coast works year-round

Unlike most of the country, our “off season” is still warm and sunny. Even in January, a late-afternoon beach session is comfortable in a light sweater. So you’re really choosing between subtle differences — softer or warmer light, busier or quieter sand — rather than good weather versus bad.

Winter & early spring (December–March): snowbird season

These are our busiest months, and for good reason. The humidity drops, the sky turns crisp and clear, and the light takes on a soft, golden quality that’s hard to beat. It’s also when many visiting families are in town — grandparents wintering on Anna Maria Island, or the whole crew down for a holiday week. If you’re planning a vacation family session or hoping to capture three generations while everyone’s together, book early — these weeks fill up fast.

Late spring & summer (April–August): warm, green, and golden

Summer evenings on the Gulf are long and warm, with sunsets that stretch past 8 p.m. The beaches are lush and the water is calm — perfect for the barefoot, in-the-water play that makes for joyful, candid photos. Afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually brief; we simply watch the radar and time around them. Summer is also a quieter booking season, so it’s easier to get the date and the beach you want.

Fall (September–November): our hidden gem

Fall might be the most underrated time for a session. The summer crowds have thinned, the light turns warm and amber, and it’s the ideal window for holiday-card photos before the December rush. If you’d love a sunset family session with the beach nearly to yourselves, this is the time.

So when should you book?

  • Want the softest light and don’t mind crowds? Aim for winter or early spring.
  • Hoping for warm-water play and a quieter beach? Late spring through summer.
  • Need holiday-card photos or an empty-feeling shoreline? Fall is your friend.
  • Visiting from out of town? Book the moment you know your travel dates — popular weeks go quickly.

Whatever season you choose, we’ll handle the timing. Every session is scheduled for the soft hour before sunset, when the Gulf Coast is at its most flattering. Take a look through our portfolio to see how each season looks, then tell us about your family and we’ll help you pick the perfect date.

Quick questions

What time of day do you photograph?

Almost always the “golden hour” before sunset, when the light is soft and warm. In summer that can be as late as 7:30–8 p.m.; in winter, closer to 5 p.m. We’ll confirm the exact start time based on your date.

What happens if it rains?

Gulf Coast storms are usually short. If the weather won’t cooperate, we’ll reschedule to the next best evening at no charge — we’d rather wait a day than fight the sky.
